The paper with the title “Fracture analysis of eco-friendly brass alloys: Comparison study and preliminary assessment” authored by Mr. Anagnostis Toulfatzis and Dr. George Pantazopoulos from ELKEME S.A. and Prof. Alkiviadis Paipetis from University of Ioannina, was presented in the 14th International Conference on Fracture, Rhodes, Greece, June 18-23, 2017. In the frame of this study, the fracture resistance of eco-friendly (Pb free) brass alloys (CW510L and CW511L) was investigated using fracture mechanics testing techniques. Impact tests (Charpy) and Crack-Tip-Opening-Displacement (CTOD) tests according to ISO 148-1 and BS 7448-1 standards respectively, together with qualitative macro- and SEM micro-fractographic analysis were employed for the assessment of fracture resistance and fracture mechanisms operated during dynamic, fatigue and quasi-static loading conditions. The influence of post-processing heat treatment on the performance of eco-friendly brass alloys under the imposed loading conditions was evaluated and discussed. The fracture mechanics findings were also compared with the respective test results of conventional machinable leaded brass (CW614N).
