Dr. I. Contopoulos gave a presentation entitled “Mathematical Modeling in the Steel Industry” in which he gave an overview of the following three successful applications of Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) Modeling in the physical analysis of industrial processes associated with the production of steel in various companies of the VIOHALCO Group:

  1. Thermal analysis of billet production through casting, solidification, transferring and induction re-heating in the SOVEL Micromill (Volos, GR). Our results contributed to the successful installation and operation of the new induction furnace.
  2. Full thermal analysis of the slab pre-heating furnace in STOMANA (Sofia, BG). Our results emphasized the important role of radiation and exhaust gas energy recuperation, confirmed the minor effect of hotspots in the internal oven wall, and overall allowed for a deeper understanding and control of the physical processes taking place in the furnace.
  3. Flux entrainment during casting in STOMANA (Sofia, BG). Our simulations confirmed that the root cause is surface Kelvin-Helmholtz instability due to the horizontal circulation of the metal in the mold.

The presentation was greatly appreciated by all participants as attested by the Conference organizers (ANSYS/Simtec).
